| XP1. GENERAL POPULATION | |
| TOTAL PERSONS/PERCENT SAMPLED | Sample estimate population and % of population sampled. Users should be aware that all data in this report are based on a sample (approx.1-in-6 households) and are subject to sampling error. The smaller the % Sampled value, the larger the sampling error. |
| PER SQUARE MILE / LAND AREA | Persons Per Square Mile is a measure of population density. The denominator used in this calculation is total land area in square miles. Water area not included. |
| FEMALES/PERCENT | Number of females and females as a % of total population. |
| LIVING IN RURAL AREAS/ON FARMS | A "rural area" is by (Census Bureau) definition not in an urbanized area (long story) and not in a town of 2500 or more population. "Farm" definition is complex but includes sales of agricultural products of at least $1,000 in 1989. |
| LIVING IN GROUP QUARTERS | Group Quarter population includes people in shelters for the homeless and in street locations, as well as nursing homes, dormitories, barracks, prisons, etc. |
| XP2. PERSONS BY RACE/HISPANIC | |
Race is based on self-indentification, i.e. whatever the respondent checked on the survey. Note: Hispanic is not a race. It is a separate characteristic. | |
| The first 4 rows of this table will usually add up to close to the total population, but not always. There is an "Other race" category not shown here explicitly. The full STF3 file has tables that break down race by Hispanic/non-hispanic. | |
| XP3. PERSONS BY AGE COHORT | |
| Number/ Percent/ Cumulative Percent and Median Age | |
| The first number is the count of persons in the age cohort. The second number (column) is that count as a % of the total population, and the third column is a cumulative % figure. Thus in the row for the 25-34 age group, if the number in the third column is 45.2 it means that 45.2% of the population less than 35 years old. | |
| XP4. HOUSEHOLDS BY SIZE | |
| TOTAL HOUSEHOLDS/AVERAGE SIZE | Total households = Total Occupied Housing Units. The average size is simply total persons living in housing units (excludes group quarters) divided by total households. |
| 1 PERSON/1 PERSON OVER 65 | Total Households with 1 Person, and Count of such households where the person was at least 65 years old |
| PCT HHS: 2 PERSONS / 3-4 / 5+ | % of all households with exactly 2 persons; with 3 or 4 persons; and with 5 or more. |

| XP6. HOUSEHOLD INCOME 1989 | |
| Census Bureau's definition of income differs from Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and others. Question asked in '90 re: previous year's income. In 1989 dollars, which are 1.676 times 1979 dollars (inflation factor). | |
| MEDIAN/AVERAGE | Median Household Income estimated from intervals. (Median is the "middle" value of the distribution; half the houeholds had this much income or less.) For calculating the average figure no household was counted as more than $999,999. |
| XP7. FAMILIES BY # WORKERS | |
| Counts of families with specified number of workers and their average incomes. | |
| XP8. OTHER INCOME MEASURES | |
| MEDIAN/AVG FAMILY INCOME | Household income statistics (table XP6) include households with 1 person or unrelated roommates, but family statistics do not. This causes household income means and medians to generally be less than those for family households. |
| PER CAPITA INCOME/NON-GRP QTRS. | The first PCI figure uses the total population as the universe. The second figure is based only on the persons-in-household basis, i.e. it excludes persons in Group Quarters. |
| PERSONS BELOW POVERTY LEVEL | Poverty level is based on household size, number of persons over 65, and number of children but does not take into account variations in the cost of living by area Percent POOR is based on a universe of "persons for whom poverty status was determined" which excludes most people in group quarters and a few others. |
| XP9. LEVEL OF EDUCATION | |
| TOTAL PERSONS AGE 25+ | All percents are based on persons over 25. Most people have completed their education by that age. |
| XP10. UNEMPLOYMNT: CIV LAB FORCE | |
| Universe is persons aged 16+, Employed or Seeking Employment. Exclude Military. | |
| TOTAL CLF: UNEMPLOYED/RATE | To get Civilian Labor Force, calculate 100*UNEMPLOYED / % UNEMPLOYED |

| These are charactersistics of the housing stock, not of persons or even of households (occupied housing units). Note the %s in the second row must add to 100%. | |
| XH2. Year Structure Built | |
| Unfortunately, the census questionnaire did not get the exact year, just an interval of years. The earliest interval was "1939 or earlier" so there is no information on very old homes which would be interesting. The Decade Most Built item (first row, second column) tells when the building activity was heaviest for the area; the following row provides the number and % of homes that were built in that decade. This table is usually of more interest for smaller neighborhood areas. The data on units built in the 5.25 years prior to the census provides some measure of recent growth of the area. | |
| XH3. HOUSING VALUES AND RENTS | |
| Housing Values are based on asking owner what they thought house would sell for. | |
| SPEC. OWNER-OCC UNITS/AVG VALUE | "Specified" units exclude homes on 10+ acres, in a commercial builldg, etc. If user checked "Over 500,000" then a value of 600,000 was for median/average calcultion. If "Under 10,000" was checked a value of 9,000 was used. |
| UNITS PAYING CASH RENT/AVG RENT | This is "gross" rent which includes cost of utilities and fuels (oil, gas, etc.) In most 1980 tables, these were not included in "contract" rent figures. |
| MEDIAN HOME VALUE/MEDIAN RENT | The middle value of housing values as estimated by the homeowners (excludes rental properties, but includes values of vacant-for-sale units where the asking price was used for the value). Median rent is the middle value of gross rents paid. Includes any currently rented property or vacant-for-rent units. |
