More than a million Missourians lived in a different house in 2005 than they did in 2006 according to estimates released September 12th by the U.S. Census Bureau. The data come from the Bureau’s new American Community Survey (ACS) for 2006. Among the 5,767,935 Missourians age one and older, the ACS estimates that 1,028,536 live in a different house in 2006 than they did a year earlier. The Missouri percent of movers (17.8%) is slightly higher than the U.S. level (16.8%).
Most Missouri movers (56.2%) stayed in the same county they lived in a year ago. Over a quarter (26.1%) of movers came from another county in Missouri and 15.8 percent moved from out of state. About two percent of Missourians in a new residence came from abroad while nationally 3.8 percent are estimated to have come from abroad.
This year the American Community Survey provides social and economic estimates for areas with an estimated population of at least 65,000 persons. Sixteen Missouri counties, together accounting for two-thirds of the state’s population, meet that threshold.
Among Missouri’s largest counties, St. Louis County has the smallest percent of movers (13.8%) and Boone County, which has a relatively large student population, has the largest percent of movers (27%). See Table 1.
